For a custom star map gift, choose the date and place of the moment you most want to remember: usually a first date, a proposal or a wedding, at the location where it happened. The map then shows the night sky calculated for that date and place, with your names and the date printed beneath.

Choosing the details is the part that makes a star map personal, and it is also where people hesitate most. This guide explains the options so you can decide with confidence.

The stars you see overhead depend on where you stand and when you look. As the Earth turns, the sky shifts through the night; over the year, different constellations come into view; and someone in New York sees a different part of the sky than someone in Sydney on the same evening. A star map is a picture of one particular sky, so the date and place you choose are what make it yours.

On Our Night Sky Star Map, the sky is calculated for the date and place you choose, and you see a preview before ordering.

A first date is the most common starting point for a couple’s star map, and it works for any stage of a relationship. It suits anniversaries in particular, because it marks where the story began. If you are not certain of the exact day, ask your partner indirectly or check old messages and photos; a date that is close but wrong tends to be noticed.

A proposal usually has a clear date and a clear place, which makes it an easy choice. It is a natural engagement gift, and many couples keep it alongside a wedding map later.

For a wedding or a first anniversary, the wedding date and the ceremony location are the obvious pair. If the ceremony and reception were in different towns, pick the one that feels most like “the” moment to you.

Using the place where the moment happened is the most faithful choice: it shows the sky as it was above you at that time. This is the right pick when the location itself is part of the memory, such as a proposal on a trip or a wedding in a hometown.

Some couples prefer the city they share today, paired with a meaningful date. That turns the map into a picture of home rather than a single event. Neither is more correct; it depends on whether the gift is about the moment or about the life you have built since.

Ask yourself what you would say when someone asks about the print on your wall. If the answer starts with “this is where”, use the place it happened. If it starts with “this is us”, the place you live now may suit you better.

Your names and the date appear beneath the sky. Check spelling carefully in the preview, especially for names with accents or unusual spellings, because the map is printed exactly as you enter it.

Our Night Sky Star Map is printed on 189 g/m² matte paper and comes in a wooden frame with an acrylic front, with hanging hardware included. Use where you live now if you want the map to represent your shared home. Both are valid choices.

Yes, they can. The visible sky depends on location as well as date, so the same night can look different from two different places.

Yes.
